How I Became a Tech Expert Without a University Degree

How I Became a Tech Expert Without a University Degree in Tech.

They say you need a university degree to make it in tech—but I’m living proof that passion, persistence, and purpose can take you further than paper ever could. My name is Darlington Mbawike, and I want to share my journey with you. This is not just a story—this is your permission to believe in yourself.

1. The Spark That Ignited It All

It didn’t start in a classroom. It started with curiosity. Late nights browsing through coding forums, testing Python scripts on an old laptop, and asking questions that others were too proud to ask. I didn’t know everything—but I knew I wanted to learn.

2. My Tools: The Internet, Discipline, and Faith

I didn’t have tuition money, but I had Wi-Fi. I learned HTML, CSS, JavaScript, MongoDB, Python, and Ruby from free platforms like W3Schools, FreeCodeCamp, and of course—ChatGPT. I built, broke, and rebuilt. My spiritual journey helped me stay grounded when I felt like quitting.

3. The Projects That Built Me

I didn’t wait for certificates—I built projects.

  • A snooker board app in React
  • An AI-powered educational game that teaches coding, math, language, and even my original quotes
  • A personal cryptocurrency mining app (currently in progress)

Each project taught me something real. Not theory—practice.

4. Rejection Turned Into Redirection

Many companies ignored my CV. But then I realized—I don’t need validation from people who haven’t seen my grind. I created my brand: Darchums Tech. I built my site, blog, and presence. Now I share what I’ve learned with the world.

5. What You Can Do

If you’re reading this and doubting yourself, don’t. You don’t need permission to be great.

Start with:

  • One language (Python is a great start)
  • One small project (a to-do list, calculator, or blog)
  • One quote that pushes you forward (here’s mine:)
“Wisdom begins where the need to prove yourself ends.” — Darchums

Conclusion

No degree? No problem. I didn’t take the traditional road, but I made my own—and now, I teach others how to do the same. Your journey starts today. Let the world catch up later.
